Classroom Management when applying TPR
One of the main roles of the teacher inside the classroom is to
manage, control, organize and observe his class. Pupils grouping is very
necessary within the TPR method:
1. Lockstep
All the pupils are working with the teacher. The pupils work as one
group and the teacher acts as controller and assessor. All the pupils are
concentrating and the teacher can be sure that everyone can hear what is
said, and the teacher is considered as a good language model.
2. Pair-work and Group Work
We adopt pair-work and group-work activities where pupils interact
naturally. These activities increase the learners motivation. Besides,
learners can benefit from each other s skills and from strategies which
will increase their interest in learning. Learners are also given the
opportunity to work individually, as is sometimes necessary in real life
situations.
a. Pair-work:
1. Two pupils work together to complete the task.
2. Pair-work is extremely important because it gives pupils time to
practice the language they have been taught.
3. This is the pupil s chance to communicate in English.
4. The teacher should ensure that all pupils understand the activity
and what is expected of them.
5. The teacher should tell pupils to work with the person to their
left, their right, directly in front of or directly behind them.
6. The teacher should vary the instruction so that the pupils do not
always work with the same partner.
7. Sometimes, it may be worth getting less able pupils to work
with stronger ones, so that the stronger ones can help the
weaker ones.
