Contemporary Poetry:
Contemporary poetry, from the 1970s has moved along various lines. It rejects both the modernists, abstract philosophizing and experimentation ,contemporary poetry has been suffering from an anxiety that poetry has exhausted all possible forms. Cyber-culture has enabled new experimentation with hypertexts, which provides a new form. To group the poets of and after 1970s by movement and tendencies is very difficult. Of the poets of the 1970s Donald Davie, is known for a more philosophical and abstract poetry, He wrote semi-urban and rural poetry and is more romantic than most poets of his generation. Nostalgia, memory, rural landscape and longing are marks of Davie’s poetry. Roy Fisher, another contemporary poet, wrote some of the best landscape poetry in the 20th century. He uses simple and direct images with a very little abstraction. His most important work is City, a collection of both prose and poetry. Poetry of this period is short drawen from every day life .In the 1970s, the centre of gravity of mainstream poetry moved to Northern Ireland, with the emergence of poets like R. S. Thomas, Seamus Heaney and others. R. S. Thomas was a major spokesperson for Welsh cultural nationalism. His favourite subject is the landscape of Welsh communities. In his poetry, he always keeps the countryside over the city farmer over the banker. A peasant turns into a heroic figure in his poetry. Through his poetry, Thomas wanted to draw attention to the land’s history and its ongoing battles to retain its identity against assimilation under British label. The direct assertion of his roots and identity is seen in poems like ‘A Welsh’ Testament’.There is a sense of patriotism in most of the poetry of this period specially the Irish one.
