1.6 Adjectives of quality, namely those describing human character or condition can be used as nouns , if they are preceded by the. Such nouns will denote a class of persons and should be used in general sense only . thus they have a plural meaning and are followed by plural verbs. A single person is referred to only if a noun is added after the adjective.
The brave are respected . (= all brave people ).
Robin hood gave the poor what he stole from the rich.
The dead do not talk.
But: I gave the poor beggar some money.

Adjective and pronouns 4.1 Demonstrative a
The forms this .these . that . and those may be used either as Adjectives or as pronouns .
as Adjectives they are the only ones that agree with their nouns ; and they to so only in
number . in order to function as Adjectives they have to be followed nouns or by Adjectives -
modifiers plus nouns ; otherwise they function as pronouns .
e.g.
this house is new . ( adj. – sing. )
I want that new book . ( adj. – sing. )
These men are workers . ( adj. – pl. )
All those white houses are for sale . ( adj. – pl. )
- pl. ) I recognize these ; but I don’t know those . ( prone.
When used as Adjectives The above – mentioned demonstratives may be followed by one \ ones when there is some idea of comparison or selection . however – the use of one \ ones is obligatory only when another Adjectives stands between it and demonstrative .
e. g.
all these smell delicious : I ill choose this ( one )
these books are all useful but Id recommend these ( one )
although she likes these brown ones , she still wants those grey ones .
4.2 distributive Adjectives and pronouns
This section deals with the following forms some of which are used as Adjectives and pronouns while others are used as pronouns only . the forms are dealt with in groups according to their meanings and as follows ;
1 . each , every , all .
2 . everyone , everybody , everything .
3 . Either , neither .
