Referencing

A reference list lists only the sources you refer to in your writing.
The purpose of the reference list is to allow your sources to be found by your reader. It also gives credit to authors you have consulted for their ideas. All references cited in the text must appear in the reference list, except for personal communications (such as conversations or emails) which cannot be retrieved.
A bibliography is different from a reference list as it lists all the sources used during your research and background reading, not just the ones you refer to in your writing.

In-text referencing
The basics of an in-text reference in APA:
• Include author or authors and year of publication.
• Use round brackets.
Example: (Smith & Bruce, 2018)



If you quote directly from an author you need to include the page or paragraph number of the quote in your in-text reference. See the Quotes section below for more advice on adding quotes into your work.

The Reference List
All in-text references should be listed in the reference list at the end of your document. The purpose of the reference list entry is to contain all the information that a reader of your work needs to follow-up on your sources. An important principle in referencing is to be consistent.
